New Zealand Superannuation (NZ Super): Complete Guide
A practical guide to how NZ Super works, who can get it, what the rates are, and how to apply. This article is designed for periodic updates as rules and rates change.
Last reviewed: 13 Feb 2026 (NZT)
1) Introduction
NZ Superannuation is New Zealand's government pension for eligible people aged 65 and over. It is a universal payment (not asset-tested), but it is taxable and eligibility criteria apply.
NZ Super is paid fortnightly (usually on Tuesday). You must apply for it; it does not start automatically.
2) How NZ Super works
- Start age: 65 years old.
- Payment frequency: Fortnightly.
- Tax treatment: Tax is deducted before payment (PAYE style).
- Means testing: Not asset-tested, but overseas pensions can affect entitlement/payment.
- While working: You can still receive NZ Super while working (tax code may change).
3) Rates and value (current snapshot)
NZ Super rates depend on your relationship and living situation, plus your tax code. The official rates page should always be treated as the source of truth.
Fortnightly gross rates (before tax)
| Situation | Gross (fortnightly) | After tax (M code) |
|---|---|---|
| Single, living alone | $1,254.28 | $1,076.84 |
| Single, sharing accommodation | $1,153.60 | $994.00 |
| Couple, both qualify (each) | $952.94 | $828.34 |
| Couple, only one qualifies | $952.94 | $828.34 |

4) Couples vs singles: key differences
- Single rates are higher than partner rates.
- Single living alone is usually the highest single rate.
- Single sharing accommodation applies if you live with another adult (with rules around visitor duration).
- Partner situations can change rates, especially if one partner does not qualify, is in care, or is in prison.
5) Eligibility criteria
You may qualify if you meet all of these:
- Age: 65 or older.
- Status: NZ citizen, permanent resident, or residence class visa holder.
- Ordinarily resident when applying: NZ, Cook Islands, Niue, or Tokelau (with additional SSA pathways possible).
- Residence history: Required years lived in NZ from age 20, including at least 5 years from age 50.
Residence years are increasing (2024 reform)
The required years are transitioning from 10 to 20 years based on date of birth. If born on/after 1 July 1977, the requirement is 20 years from age 20 (including 5 years from age 50).
If you have time in eligible Social Security Agreement countries (or NZ Realm countries), those periods may help meet criteria.
6) Application and timing
- Not automatic: You must apply.
- When to apply: Up to 12 weeks before your 65th birthday.
- If you apply late: Contact Work and Income; payment start timing can be affected.
- How to apply: Online via Work and Income.
7) Tax, work income, and overseas pensions
- NZ Super is taxable income. Tax is deducted before payment.
- Tax code matters: if you have other income, your tax code may need to change.
- No ACC earners' levy is deducted from NZ Super.
- If you or your partner qualify for an overseas pension, this can affect NZ Super and should be declared.
8) Practical checklist
- Check eligibility and residence years well before age 65.
- Confirm your likely single/couple rate category.
- Choose the right tax code for your full income picture.
- Apply in the 12-week window before turning 65.
- Review payment dates and cashflow timing.
